Posture

Posture and voice: the body is part of the instrument

Posture has as much place in my lessons as singing: it changes the sound, and it feels good.

How posture changed my method

During my journey as a singer, one day I understood how important posture is. I started to take an interest, to learn it, and it upended my approach. My method took on a much broader dimension, and became more effective and more functional. Well-being no longer came only from singing and its benefits: it came from singing and posture together.

The body changes the sound

The voice travels through the body. A simple position can sometimes change it right away. In my experience, head position alone helps your voice carry better and sit lower, almost effortlessly, and the throat opens up.

I help you become aware of your body and find good posture. It helps your voice carry further and sound more alive, and makes it easier to use the muscles that support it, low in the belly. It also opens the shoulders, among other things.

What we explore

  • Head position.
  • Placement of the arms.
  • The pelvis.
  • Standing and sitting.
  • The way you walk.
  • Breathing: breathing lower, into the belly, rather than from the throat.

I suggest different body directions, and you try them one by one to feel what they change.

Posture in everyday life

This work doesn't stay in the lesson room. I give you cues for daily life:

  • At the desk and at work. At a computer, painting, sculpting, sitting or standing: a posture that improves how you carry yourself, engages certain muscles with almost no effort and supports physical work.
  • With your phone. It's always in your hand: you might as well hold it with better posture.
  • In the car. How to sit and drive.
  • The upper body. Opening the back, the shoulder blades, the collarbones.
  • The belly. Releasing tension around the solar plexus and letting the back muscles support the body.

You often feel freer in your breathing and truly relaxed in the belly.

Well-being beyond singing

In my experience, good posture does the body a lot of good and contributes to overall physical well-being. When you feel good in your body, you have more self-confidence, and you can hear it in your voice. You also feel calmer and more at ease, in a different way than through singing alone. These cues help you get into the flow state, where you let go. It is not a medical treatment: it is a practice you live and feel.
